Everyone rants about the fashion houses of Italy and France but have a closer look at Spain. The creativity often unfolds in more daring and alternative ways than the conservative designers of France. In general the classiest dressing population in Europe and the plenty of trend setters have come out of Spain – and Jávea can proudly present a long list of local fashion designers with talents reaching way beyond the borders of Spain.

Tourism Relief: Saving The Chiringuitos ! http://www.javeavacation.com/2012/costa-blanca-news/tourism-relief-saving-the-chiringuitos/ http://www.javeavacation.com/2012/costa-blanca-news/tourism-relief-saving-the-chiringuitos/#comments Sat, 16 Jun 2012 00:29:15 +0000 http://www.javeavacation.com/?p=329 Continue reading ]]> Excellent news for tourists visiting Jávea – the beach bars are staying and might even be able to expand. Similarly restaurants and bars near the sea on other beaches of Javea, such as the Porticholl beach restaurant, the port promenade bars and many more may be able to get a permanent license to please and help entertain visitors to Javea with drinks and meals right by the sea.

The Chiringuitos, Jávea beach bars, have been under threat from the Spanish “Law Of The Coasts”, that is intended to protect the beauty of the coastline from deteriorating under the pressure of commercial use. However, the law has also had highly unfortunate side effects as in principle it rendered popular tourist spots such as the promenade service on the port and the beach bars on the strip between the Arenal Beach and The Port, Duanes Al Mar, illegal.

la-siesta-javeamontgo di bongo

In Jávea, the enforcement of the law (Ley De La Costa) has been carried out with a rather relaxed and pragmatic approach over the years. The beach bars have been allowed to exist whilst taking liberties well beyond the letter of the law but very much to the joy of tourists and residents alike. Similarly several other restaurants and bars have had dining arrangements in areas that weren´t allowed, one example being the tables and chairs on the sea side of the promenade on the Port.

Now, the new law appears to be a more flexible version of the old one. Fundamentally the law now recognises tourism as a main priority for Spain and allows for local zoning of tourist areas that may get general dispensations from the regulations, requirements for distance from the sea etc.

restaurant portitxol beach javea

The Jávea chiringuitos are in one such obvious tourist zone. The much beloved beach bars such as La Siesta, Montgo di Bongo, Mintt, Moskito and Full Moon are seemingly exactly what the law seeks to protect as valuable tourist attractions on the beach that cause no harm to the beauty of the coastline or the nature of Spain. Given the old law was not yet enforced against the chiringuitos in Jávea, it is obvious that a tourist zone is likely to be authorised on the strip between Jávea Port and the Arena.l

The Jávea council is apparently already working on changing the rules for the chiringuitos, so that they will no longer have to pay fines repeatedly for breaking the rules, but will in fact instead be secured for the future, with a strong possibility that the Chiringuitos will be given permission to renew their licences.

la siesta javeachiringuito moskito javea

In theory it is probably possible to allow the tables and chairs back on the port promenade as well to the joy of residents and tourists alike, all it requires is a zoning and potentially a rental fee from the restaurants.

This is all good news for tourists and seasonal busnesses in Jávea. The danger of the beach bars being limited or closed seems over. It is time to head down and enjoy some pleasant drinks in the afternoon sun with the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean at your feet.

Euro2012 Football in Javea http://www.javeavacation.com/2012/javea-xabia/euro2012-football-in-javea/ http://www.javeavacation.com/2012/javea-xabia/euro2012-football-in-javea/#comments Fri, 08 Jun 2012 20:26:29 +0000 http://www.javeavacation.com/?p=244 Continue reading ]]> The Euro 2012 football championships are about to kick off. Being on holiday in Javea Spain does not mean you have to miss the important games, to the contrary, Jávea is a fantastic place to enjoy the big sporting events with fellow football fans.

The England Games – Big Screens and Beer in Javea
As usual Javea has been blessed with an influx of English tourists and summer residents replacing the rain in England with Spanish beaches and sunshine. Several bars cater specifically to the English audience in Xabia and exactly those places are often the best ones for catching the England EURO2012 games with fellow Union Jack supporters.

The England Games:
England – France 11 June 2012, 18.00 CET, (19.00 local time)
England – Sweden 15 June 2012, 20.45 CET, (21.45 local time)
England – Ukraine 19 June 2012, 20.45 CET, (21.45 local time)

An Shebeen – The Irish Pub in Jávea
Whilst nominally an Irish pub An Shebeen might well be the most atmospheric place to catch the England games. They have a giant projector screen on a back wall that is visible from most of the bar and several smaller screens strategically placed round the pub to ensure you never miss a thing.

Big sports events are typically celebrated at An Shebeen with parties before and after, fan packages and special offers on food and drinks. The Euro2012 is no exception and you can enjoy the games with cheap Carlsberg, 2 for 1 on the yummy homemade hamburgers and much more.

an-shebeen-javeaan-shebeen-javea

There is always a huge crowd of England fans, a variety of expat regulars and tourists, lined up for the games at An Shebeen, the service is superb and friendly – and they normally pride themselves in having the very best big screens in town for the games. Certainly for the England games – or if you simply want any game in premium quality with other football fans guaranteed to be around, An Shebeen is a highly recommendable choice by the Arenal Beach in Javea.

Jaspas Bar – The Homely Alternative On The Hill
Jaspas Bar is located in between the Arenal Beach and Cap De La Nau in Javea. It is the closest the town gets to a real English pub with dart, pool tables and football on the big screens at all times.

I imagine Jaspas Bar serves exactly the same role as most independent local pubs in England. Its like a small friendly community having fun with the pub games, karaoke and a wide range of events – and of course they are geared up for the Euro 2012 as well.

jaspas-bar-javea3jaspas-bar-javea

Jaspas Bar has plenty of tv screens ready to show all the Euro 2012 games, theres guaranteed to be parties around the England games and even if you just fancy quietly watching Polen and Ukraine fight it out – Jaspas is a really nice place to do it because of the homely atmosphere.

Geographic Bar – Football with a Sea View
The Geographic Bar is located right in the middle of the bar and restaurant strip surrounding the Arenal Beach in Javea. The classy little place is always a fantastic choice to go and watch any kind of sports as they have multiple big screens in excellent quality and are always happy to put on whatever strange game you fancy watching.

Given its location the Geographic Bar will have a higher percentage of tourists than the other suggested places to watch the Euro 2012 games in Jávea. Obviously that makes the vibe of the place a little bit more unpredictable as the core of regulars are a minority. Yet, Geographic Bar always delivers pleasant service and some of the most fantastic cocktails and fresh smoothies on the Arenal to quench your thirst (along with plenty of nice draft beer options of course).

geographic-bar-javea-arenal-2geographic-bar-javea-arenal

England games at The Geographic Bar will always be packed and spill out onto the bar strip for a street party in the unlikely event of an English victory.

The Spain Games – Experience The Spanish Passion For Football
All the bars and venues above will of course show the Spanish team marching towards victory in the Euro 2012 and they are almost guaranteed to provide a fun evening doing so as most of the expats and tourists do support Spain along with their home team.

However, to truly get a feeling for the Spanish passion for football and enthusiasm as the local heroes enter the pitch, it is worth exploring another range of bars catering more to local Spanish audiences.

Spain – Italy 10 June 2012, 18.00 CET, (18.00 local time)
Spain – Ireland 14 June 2012, 20.45 CET, (20.45 local time)
Spain – Croatia 18 June 2012, 20.45 CET, (20.45 local time)

Socco – Football Crazy Spanish Night Club
One of the newest night clubs on the Arenal Beach is the classy setup Socco. Being located right by the beach the club will obviously have guests from all over the world but it is a very popular choice with local Spanish residents looking for a party and well known to make excellent parties out of football games.

If you don´t wanna venture too far from the beach but still catch a Spain game in the company of people who consider the outcome a matter of life and death, Socco is your obvious choice. A quick prediction is that every single game will have Socco full to the brim of Spain supporters and huge celebrations before and after. The local Club Deportivo Javea players are often seen partying at Socco (which might explain why el futbol club Javea cant quite compete with Barcelona yet) but it all just adds to the football crazy atmosphere of Socco.

socco-night-club-javeasocco-javea

The big screens at Socco are excellent for watching the games, the place is brand new and classy, the booze and beer is reasonably priced and the visitors are a melting pot of happy party people from around the globe. Excellent choice on the Arenal!

El Varadero – Outdoor Screens and Street Parties
During the day El Varadero is a rather stylish and relaxing cafe on the Javea port, Duanes Al Mar, but when the Spanish football fever sets in the place explodes in happy parties and jolly celebrations.

Yours truly chose El Varadero to watch the World Cup Final in 2010 as its simply such a fantastic setup with screens outdoors that you can sit in the comfortable cafe area and watch. But El Varadero always tops it up with massive decorations, plenty of dressed up football fans and a staff thats cheering harder for Spain than everyone else.

el-varadero-football-javeael-varadero-football-javea2

The port is often a bit overlooked in comparison to the Javea Old Town and the Arenal Beach, but El Varadero and their fanatic football fiestas are really worth going there for!

Spanish Football in Old Town
Every single bar with the slightest bit of self respect in Xabia historic center or old town will be showing the Spain games live on big screens. The best thing really is to head up there a little while in advance, wander around the cobbled hills and seek out a bar you fancy.

There are at least 5-6 good options in or just around the square at the church of San Bartolomé and the indoor fresh food market. Look for the crowds, the face painted fanaticos and the happy gangs of Spanish supporters roaming the streets.

In the side streets and spread all over Jávea old town plenty of small cervecerias and bars will be ready to celebrate the football games too. A good option always is Bar Jose just behind the post office or a relaxing game in the beer garden at Penelope by the Plaza De La Constitucion.

There is never any trouble, brawls or drunken riots attached to football games in Javea, you are perfectly safe to bring the family even to the biggest games … and should the final end up being Spain vs England, that would be an occasion for much teasing and singing but absolutely nothing to worry about in terms of safety – even if something really strange happened and England actually won !?!

Restaurants In Jávea Spain http://www.javeavacation.com/2012/javea-xabia/restaurants-in-javea-spain/ http://www.javeavacation.com/2012/javea-xabia/restaurants-in-javea-spain/#comments Thu, 07 Jun 2012 13:06:32 +0000 http://www.javeavacation.com/?p=234 Continue reading ]]> Eating out with your family and friends at cafés, restaurants or bars is much more common in Spain than in Northern Europe. Going to a café for a siesta snack, meeting your friends for some tapas in the afternoon or sharing a paella with your extended family late in the evening are all every day things.

bistro-casa-grau-javeapaella xabia

The Spanish cuisine is delicate and varied. Obviously paella and tapas are the two most famous types of Spanish food but in fact both are umbrella labels for a wide range as dishes. Eating at a restaurant in Javea isn’t necessarily about trying traditional Spanish food though, as the availability of restaurants from around the world can literally take your taste buds on a tour of the entire globe.

Spanish Food in Javea Restaurants – Paella and Tapas
It would of course be shameful to visit the Valencia area and Jávea in particular without trying out some of the local specialties. There are plenty of restaurants on the Arenal Beach serving paella and a variety of tapas bars to choose from in the same area, however to get the real taste of Spain you really should make the effort and seek out your Spanish food in one of the small cosy restaurants of Javea old town – you don´t survive serving poor tapas or boring paella up in Xábia centro historica, take advantage of it.

The paella valenciano is based on seafood and once properly done by a Spanish chef the delicious fresh foods from the sea make for an excellent meal to share directly from a giant paella pan with your friends or family. Normally you order a big paella pan for at least two people, but the general idea is to meet up and share among a bigger gang of people.

tapas-javea-spainrestaurants-in-javea-spain

Tapas is of course just a label for “little delicious dishes” and each restaurant or tapas bar will have their own homemade selection of goodies to choose from – patatas bravas, squid rings, oysters and mushrooms, cheese bowls, meat balls in spicy sauce etc, its all tapas. Now some tourist restaurants will charge you 5-8euros per tapas dish and their sizes will be close to a full dish, this is a misunderstanding. The ideal way of eating some genuine Javea tapas yummies is to sit down with some friends, order 2-3 tapas each, have them all served to share and mix your own meal of several different flavors and types of food. The cafe at the fresh food indoor market by the church in Javea old town tends to have offers of around 5euros/5 tapas, which is perfect for creating a table full of excellent little dishes.

What Restaurants to choose in Javea Old Town ?
Finding good places to eat and try out the Spanish cuisine is incredibly easy in the old town of Jávea. Unlike in the tourist parts of town you don´t as such need reviews or recommendations, they quality is generally very high and the service welcoming – I have yet to walk out of a restaurant in Javea old town feeling ripped off. Of course, personal taste differs and every chef takes pride in making his own special offerings flavored exactly to his version of perfections but that is really for you to individually try out. Have a pleasant stroll through the narrow streets, have a look at the menus and offers (the “menus del dia” are always worth looking out for) – and choose one of the countless inviting, friendly and charming places to have your meal.

bistro-casa-grau

If I had to name a few nice restaurants for Spanish food and/or having pleasant meals in Jávea old town I would recommend Bistro Casa Grau, Tasca El Salaito or maybe Bar Jóse for tapas, perhaps Fuentes or La Refugi for paella. Other places not to be missed include La Musa, La Parilla Del Cellar which is amazing for all kinds of meat dishes (traditional or not) and if you take a little drive out from old town round Montgo towards Jesus Pobre, one of the very best restaurants in the Javea area, El Gaucho Jávea, greets you with a menu of absolute culinary delights. But seriously, the options are endless and you are unlikely to go wrong.

Of course, other parts of town have excellent meals in Jávea – and we will be straight back to have a look at some of the restaurants ready to fill your tummy with fresh dishes on the Arenal, the port and elsewhere…. But first, do try the tapas bars, paellas and other specialties in Javea old town, its a world of exquisite food and outstanding chefs right at your fingertips!

Javea Beach Bars – Birthday At Moskito http://www.javeavacation.com/2012/javea-xabia/javea-beach-bars-mintt-vs-moskito/ http://www.javeavacation.com/2012/javea-xabia/javea-beach-bars-mintt-vs-moskito/#comments Sun, 03 Jun 2012 23:03:16 +0000 http://www.javeavacation.com/?p=225 Continue reading ]]> A small story from today at the beach bars in Javea …

We had all been invited to a 1yo birthday at Mintt Javea for this afternoon. Liz Yardley of Hibiscus Cakes had made a stunningly yummy looking birthday cake for the toddler Charley … and all was happy. Except, the beach bar wouldn’t allow the cake to be consumed on their premises.

javea beach bar moskitojavea beach bar mosquito

So … the party of 10-15 people was quickly moved to Moskito … another lovely Javea chirinquito close to the port. Moskito not only allowed the party to consume the birthday cake, they also provided plates for eating it and a bottle of free champagne to help the celebrations. Needless to say, the other beach bar lost the business of 15 people eating and drinking all day plus probably the future business of most of the people involved, as it just seemed a bit too petty. Moskito on the other hand scored big plus points in everyones books for being incredibly friendly and volunteering freebies for the birthday party without being asked to.

Both Javea beach bars are extremely nice for a comfortable afternoon, their prices are very similar to each others and the menus almost identical. This means that the one getting the business is usually gonna be the one that provides the nicest atmosphere, makes you feel welcome and flexibly caters to your wishes. I doubt anyone would hesitate for a second in recommending Moskito for that purpose after todays experiences.

javea chirinquitoshibiscus cakes javea

Obviously, all chirinquitos in Javea have a food menu with a variety of delicious meals available. They can not as such be expected to allow food from elsewhere to be consumed on their premises, but exactly for that reason the lovely service provided by the Moskito Javea chirinquito stood out so positively and in such a sharp contrast to the “by-the-book” refusal.

By the way, the cake from Hibiscus cakes was gorgeous and got swallowed with great delight by the mixed party of Spanish, English and even Danish birthday celebrators whilst enjoying the free champagne, the sunshine and the lovely drinks at Moskito in Javea!

The British Queens Diamond Jubilee. Now, if you are on holiday in Javea there is no reason to miss out on the celebrations as severals bars and restaurants have a full program ready for English royalists wanting to entertain themselves and praise their beloved English monarchy.

Having taken a quick drive through town one of the most prepared places to enjoy the jubilee celebrations would appear to be GJ´s Sandwich Bar. The Union Jack flies high all over the restaurant, a big screen is ready for the live coverage of the jubilee on sunday (june 3rd) and a range of English specialties such as Scottish Eggs, Union Jack Cupcakes and plenty more are ready to be served.

The celebrations start already saturday (2nd june) at GJs in Jávea with special entertainment for families and kids. The Saturday afternoon at GJ´s feature face painting and balloon making for the kids with a special jubilee entertaining the kids whilst the adults can relax with the fresh foods and delicious jubilee menus.

The Sunday of the Jubilee celebrations are even more packed with events, as stated by one of the owners of GJ´s, Gina Gatoli: “On Sunday we have the big screen viewing of all the celebrations taking place in england…for your English taste buds we have pork and hot stuffing baps and the truly British English banger and fried onion baps…plus our very own homemade union jack cup cakes…so come on down and join the party…xxxx

You find GJ´s and the jubilee celebrations right by the Arenal Beach in Jávea, here it is on a map:

The celebrations at GJs – The Ultimate Sandwich Bar in Javea is just one example of how you can enjoy your royal tendencies whilst on vacation in Jávea. An equally impressive program with a full on street party is being arranged at and around Jaspas Bar up towards the Cabo De La Nao for instance and plenty of other bars follow suit with big screen viewing on the sunday, parties at night or family entertainment.

Royals, monarchy and queens !?! What about an old fashioned republican visiting Jávea and craving an anti dose to all these jubilee celebrations ? Well, I failed to dig up a single anti-jubilee or republican party to recommend, but heading up to the historic center of Jávea for your weekend entertainment is a fairly safe bet. There are plenty of things happening in Javea old town too and the Spanish couldn’t care less about the British queen.

Jubilee Market Day For Afghan Heroes
If you´re a true royalist and simply can´t stop celebrating there is a chance to have a very nice afternoon with live music, market stalls and family entertainment in Javea on the 10th of June. The Jubilee fair in Javea is set up as a charity event with all proceeds going to the noble cause of Afghan Heroes. Click the poster for full info:

The fair opens its doors at 11am on Sunday the 10th of June in the area round Bar For You, just behind the Arenal Beach and next to the mini golf facility – that kids will have free access to during the day along with funny bouncy castles and much more. The live music will be performed by local entertainers Strickland, Adam King and Steward Collier.

Apart from the live music in Javea, the adults have a generous 40 stalls to cruise for exciting bargains, a bbq for delicious foods and plenty of available refreshments in comfortable surroundings within a stone throw from the beach.

Even unheated pools are warm enough for a comfortable swim and the beaches are filling up with skinny dippers and sunbathing tourists. As always, a holiday in Jávea can be pleasantly enjoyed without leaving the sandy beaches of the Arenal and the surrounding restaurants, bars and activities. However, if you want to add more diverse experiences to your vacation in Javea Spain, June is the perfect month to visit as it is overflowing with exciting things to do.

Sant Joan De Fogueras in Jávea
The main event in June in Jávea has to be the annual Spanish fiesta Fogueras De Sant Joan. A 2 week celebration of the saint Joan kicking off with inaugurations on the 9th of June and then running at full pace from the 14th to the 23th of June. Fogueras De Sant Joan in Javea is a fiesta like to other. During the days you can enjoy sports in the streets, traditional religious parades with colorful costumes and plenty of eye candy.

Obviously there will be bulls at Fogueras. Plenty of bulls. Involved in bull running chasing the residents round town, chasing the players in bull football, delivering a big bull poo to settle the bull bingo and so forth. No harm is done to the bulls and no bull fighting takes place. It is perfectly safe to go and watch the events even if you feel strongly about animal rights, the bulls are treasured and looked after well.

bull running Jáveabulls at fiesta spain

In the evening and nights Xábia old town is buzzing with party activities all through Fogueras De Sant Joan. The main squares of Javea old town have live music or DJs playing every night. The special penyas and quintas have little home made bars throwing spontaneous parties on every street corner. The nights in Jávea are not to be missed if you love excessive fireworks displays, wild drunken parades, burning statues, jumping over burning fires in the streets and a whole range of other mad activities forming the extraordinary experience that Fogueras De Sant Joan truly is.

fogueras de sant joan javeafogueras de sant joan javea

The main Jávea fiesta reaches it climax with the insane night of fire, Correfocs. This is a night for the daring. It starts out with jumping burning fires for good luck before the insane spectacle kicks off with demons chasing everyone through the streets by firing fireworks directly at them. It sounds dangerous and granted, it hurts and wouldn’t pass northern European safety regulations in a million years, but it is also one of the most amazing and unique experiences you can hope to find during your holiday in Spain.

The International Festival of Javea
Another main cultural event to attend in June is the International Festival. The 3 day festival runs from the 28th to the 30th of June in Avenida Augusta. The International Festival is all about bringing cultures closer together by literally letting everyone have a little taste of each others specialties.

Physically the International Festival in Javea is setup as big horse shoe of tents with each of the tents being occupied by a different nationality displaying the prides of their home country and serving their local dishes. It will be possible to have a thorough taste of international cuisine from more than 20 countries including Spain, Peru, Brasil, Germany, France, Bolivia, Colombia, Morocco, Greece and many others. The culinary delights are spiced up with entertainment on a big stage featuring performances from the various nationalities as well as live music.

Exhibitions in Javea
A grand exhibition featuring the “Art and death in the Montgo, the cave in the Migdia ravine” (Art i mort al Montgó; la Cova del barranc de Migdia) is available to the public all through June at the Cime Foundations exhibition hall at Avenida De Alicante 18. The “Art and death in the Montgo” exhibition displays the explorations of ancient caves, the cave paintings and the graves found in the Migdia ravine in Montgó. Certain of the findings can be dated all the way back to the Chalcolithic period (some 4,683 years ago). If history and archeology has your interest, this is an exhibition not to be missed – and it is presented by the very people conducting the explorations of the Montgó caves, so you are guaranteed expertise, passion and know how.

An exhibition of artworks by local Xábia artists is worth a visit in Jávea old town. The exhibition features artworks in several disciplines such as painting, patchwork, ceramics and needle work and is available to the public at Casa Tena (Calle Mayor 41) until 9th of June.

Among other interesting cultural activities and exhibitions in Jávea it is worth pointing to Soler Blascos photographic display at the Municipal Museum of Xábia, themed “Sahara, The Desert of Hope“. Further the artist Rosa Segura has an interesting display of sculptures at Casa Del Cable

The Nature of Javea – Outdoor Activities
Obviously sitting on the beach in the hot sunshine with a pina colada is a form of outdoor activity, but should you fancy something slightly more energetic there are excellently scenic options in Jávea.

El_camí_a_la_marina_altanature of javea

The Xábia Viva group has a tree planting day at Granadella on June 3 and there are guided walks in the nature around Portitxol. In a more relaxing fashion you have the opportunity to watch the glorious nature of the Costa Blanca from sea by jumping aboard a tour with Mundo Marina in the Jávea Port – taking you to see the miradors of the area from the sea, on day trips to Calpe, Moraira or Altea or on an adventurous speedboating experience in the Mediterranean.

Jubilees, Excercises and Football
In the more random department of events most expat bars and restaurants in Javea have street parties arranged to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee on 3rd June for the royalists. Places such as the chirinquito Mintt and L´Ancora Tennis club offers pilates, zumba and salsa classes and many other terribly exercise intensive ways of losing a few pounds in the summer heat whilst meeting new people in a fun way.

The Euro 2012 football championships kick off in June and its well worth planning to watch the games out in town in Javea. England is playing France (11th June), Sweden (15th June) and Ukraine (19th June) and following another expected devastation for the self proclaimed British favorites for the title is always funny in expat bars such as Jáveas Irish bar An Shebeen, the ports El Varadero, the Geographic café on the Arenal beach or indeed any other bar mainly catering to an English audience.

The glorious Spanish heroes are up against Italy (10th), Ireland (14th) and Croatia (18th) – and you really should seek out a local Spanish bar in Jávea old town Bar Jose, El Estadio or similar to watch these and catch the enthusiasm of the home support. Any of the above can be pleasantly watched in the Jávea beach bars such as Moskito, Mintt or Carpe Diem as well, all of which tend to have big outdoor screens and parties lined up for the occasions.

A Luxury Holiday Treat – Fish Therapy in Jávea http://www.javeavacation.com/2012/javea-xabia/a-luxury-holiday-treat-fish-therapy-in-javea/ http://www.javeavacation.com/2012/javea-xabia/a-luxury-holiday-treat-fish-therapy-in-javea/#comments Sat, 26 May 2012 07:22:04 +0000 http://www.javeavacation.com/?p=190 Continue reading ]]> What is a holiday without a few luxury treats to make the experience special?

The Natural Fish Spa in Javea offers one of these little luxury breaks from sunbathing on the beach with a rather divine cocktail of fish therapy, massage and a variety of beauty products as add ons. The shop itself is an impressively classy setup with scented candles burning, calm background music and stylish furnishing in a modern fashion.

Fish Treatment – What Is It Like?
Basically, you buy a 30minute session of fish therapy. The session starts with a thorough cleaning of your feet for hygienic reasons before you´re seated at a small pool with fish inside. Stick your feet in the water and for the next 30minutes the Garra Rufa fish will nibble away at your dead skin cells to leave your feet smooth and soft.

The treatment itself may sound scary with a gang of fish eating away at your feet, however these tiny fishies do not actually have teeth or cause any level of pain or discomfort. To the contrary, the sensation is somewhat tingling and not unlike a gentle massage.

The calm ambiance of the shop and deliberate stimulation of the senses with tranquil music and gratifying smells makes for a highly pleasurable 30minutes of serenity and soothing delight. During the session you´re treated to a free drink of your choice and if you can get your eyes of the fascinating fish at work on your feet there´s a variety of literature available as well.

Is Fish Treatment Safe?
The Garra Rufa fish originate from Turkey where they have been used for pleasure and treatment of skin problems for centuries. Their mouths contain a mild antiseptic, thus making their efforts not only smoothing of the skin and sterile but healing as well.

British tourists and expatriates may have a certain reluctance towards fish therapy after a polemic story in The Sun a few years ago casting doubts on the safety. However, the NHS in the UK did in fact investigate and concluded that whilst nothing is 100% risk free in this world, having fish therapy is significantly safer than having a swim in your pool or entering a communal pool. The reason basically is that the filtering of the small fish therapy tanks is much more efficient than in a pool and the antiseptic feature of the fish makes their efforts sterile. You can find the the full report and investigation on the NHS website.

Fish Therapy and The Extras
Once your feet have been thoroughly nibbled by Garra Rufa fish you will find your feet very soft and smooth. Its almost like a silk layer has been applied all around your feet. To top of the experience you can buy little extras in the shop, personally I went for a foot massage which adds a wondrous icing on the already delicious cake.

Miss Magic Fingers is ready to provide your feet with an extremely pleasant after-therapy massage, but indeed the Natural Fish Spa has a full range of extras available such as full body massage, Indian head massage, nail painting and eye lash extensions.

The cost of the fish therapy is a modest 20euros with discounts available for multiple treatments and the add on foot massage ordered in this case was 5euros extra. For a full on luxury experience with healing effects, a free drink, a massive effort put into perfect hygiene and the tranquil atmosphere of the surroundings, seems astonishingly cheap.

Fancy A Holiday Fish Therapy? Info & Directions
The Natural Fish Spa does not require you to book in advance, but during the busy summer season it might be advisable to do so to avoid waiting around for a free spa. The fish therapy facilities are within easy walking distance from Jáveas Arenal Beach. Go to the canal at the northern end of the beach, follow it inlands, where it ends in a small marina you will find the Natural Fish Spa. By car you can get to the feet heaven the same way or look out for the giant fish in the window as you enter the main road to the Arenal from old town/the port. Here´s a map showing the exact location:

A fish therapy is definitely a fantastic option after a long day on the beach, for sore fiesta feet that has walked the hills of old town for days or if you simply want to spice up your vacation in Javea with a little luxury extra.

Please note that we are in no way affiliated with the Natural Fish Spa. We book, go and try it out, pay the normal price and report back with a recommendation if the experience is good enough. In this case it most certainly was and the hungry Garra Rufa fish have found another regular customer to feed on!

Booking holiday accommodation in Jávea old town during Fogueras De Sant Joan should be a conscious decision to be in the middle of one of the most fantastic, exhausting and noisy fiestas you can possibly imagine. Most days of the celebrations feature early morning awakening by stunning traditional parades, bull running and later on wild street parties, firework displays, penya bars kicking off intimate parties and live music or DJs from stages in the town squares. If you want peace and calm, sleep or just a moments rest – grab yourself an apartment or villa in another part of town during June.

However, its almost criminal to miss out on the fiesta vibe of Sant Joan in Javea. Theres a positive party atmosphere throughout. People born in Javea take the time off and travel to their hometown from all of Spain to participate which is an indication of the immensely impressive community spirit shown throughout. Unthinkable phenomenons are happening such as the town youth dressing up and parading in traditional outfits, the towns 18year olds getting on stage and telling the entire town about their future plans and everyone forming in penyas for two weeks of boozed up comradeship. All these elements are combined with intensive bull running, religious parades and parties till early morning largely every night.
